On public social networks, all types of content generate RSS feeds, so you can add an RSS feed for the latest photos, videos, events, or forum discussions to your external website. You can even add the RSS feed for latest activity on your social network. You can also pull in external RSS feeds and add them to your social network's main page, your group's main page, or your profile page.
Learn how RSS works on your social network
Feeds are a simple way to stay updated on information you care about. Most websites offer them in one of two kinds: RSS (which stands for "Really Simple Syndication") or Atom. To find a site's feed, you'll usually want to look for a little orange icon or an RSS label.

You can paste the feed's URL into a feed-reader application, like Google Reader, Bloglines or NewsGator, or use the feed reading feature built into a page like iGoogle, My Yahoo!, or Netvibes, and you'll always know when your favorite site is updated. You can also use RSS feeds to get information from dozens of sources from within your feed reader.
Pull in external content to your social network with RSS feeds
You can add RSS feeds from external websites, blogs, or other social networks to your social network on Ning. This is a great way to express yourself a bit more and pull in other content your social network's members might be interested in.
As a member, you can add an RSS feed to your profile page. If you've created a group, you can add an RSS feed to the group's page. As a Network Creator, you can add up to 10 RSS feeds to the main page of your social network. We recommend choosing just one or two great RSS feeds and sticking to those.

A few examples of RSS feeds you might want to add to your page or social network: entries from your external blog, movies you've rented on Netflix, a custom news feed for a topic area related to your social network, or an RSS feed from another social network on Ning you manage or belong to.
To add an RSS feed to your profile page, first grab the URL of the RSS feed you want to display. Next, head to your My Page on the social network and locate the RSS box, which appears at the bottom of the left column by default. Click the "Edit" button.
Paste in the feed you'd like to display on your profile. You can also give the box a title (for example, "Movies I've Netflixed"), choose how many items display, and opt for detail view or titles only. Click save and you're all set.
Grab the RSS feed for a feature on your social network
If it's public, your social network on Ning will generate RSS feeds for everything from Latest Activity updates to Photos to Forum discussions. You can use a feed reader to keep up with the action on your social network. This is useful if you want to keep up with your social network's activity at all times, or if you belong to multiple social networks on Ning and want a quick way to catch up.
Adding your social network's RSS feed to an external website - or even to another social network on Ning! - is incredibly easy. Just locate the type of content you'd like to follow. The forum is a great place to start. To get the RSS feed of latest discussions and replies in the forum, head to the Forum tab. Scroll to the bottom of the page and find the "RSS" icon and link.
Copy the URL of this link. You can get even more specific and follow only discussions in a particular category or even only discussions with a particular tag if you'd like.
Next, go to your external website or feedreader of choice. A good place to start is iGoogle, which is easy to configure and comes with a bunch of default feeds that will give you an idea of what you can use RSS for. To add a feed to your iGoogle, click the "Add stuff" link at the top right of the page. Next, at the bottom of the left column, click the "Add feed or gadget" next to the RSS icon.
Paste in the URL of the RSS feed you copied from your social network and click the "Add" button. Once your feed has successfully been added, click the "Back to iGoogle home" link at the top left of the page. Your new feed will appear in the top left corner of the page.
If you run an external website or blog, adding an RSS feed from your social network to your external website is a great way to integrate the two. For more tips on integrating your social network with your external website, check out this article.
If your social network is private, it will not generate RSS feeds for any content on the social network to protect the privacy of members. If you're the creator of the social network and you'd like to use your social network's RSS feeds without sacrificing member privacy, you might want to set your social network so that only the main page is public.
